Motorola Finds New Opportunities For Video Service Providers

Motorola Finds New Opportunities for Video Service Providers
Posted by: BBC Wires

HORSHAM, PA – Video service providers can take advantage of consumer demand for social media to offer new services, according to a new study by Motorola Mobility (soon to be part of Google).

Key trends:
- Social TV, mobile TV, personal cloud services and home automation are redefining the home ecosystem.
- Consumers believe digital entertainment and social media enhance the traditional TV experience.
- New forms of entertainment and connected services create additional revenue streams for service providers and opportunities to strengthen customer relationships.

Motorola Mobility’s 2011 Media Engagement Barometer – an independent global study of video consumption habits among 9,000 consumers in 16 markets – identified consumer demand for mobile TV, social TV, connected home and personal cloud services. Each of these categories offers service providers opportunities to expand value-added services, improve customer loyalty and tap into new revenue streams.

“Consumers are constantly connected – and they want ubiquitous access to their content and communities,” says John Burke, senior vice president and general manager, Converged Experiences, Motorola Mobility. “They don’t care about the technology to make all of this happen; they simply want it to work and expect it to fit into their daily routines. The convergence trend upon us is a tremendous opportunity for our customers to capitalize on delivering this simple, intuitive experience in the home.”

On-Demand Viewing Is a Challenge
Worldwide, viewers now watch TV and other video for an average of 15 hours per week. U.S. respondents now watch 21 hours of TV per week, two hours more than in 2010.

However, the percentage of U.S. viewers who watch on-demand TV rose to 18 percent in 2011, compared with 5 percent last year. The U.K. had a similar increase, with 15 percent of consumers watching on-demand TV in 2011, compared with 8 percent in 2010. To retain viewers for initial airings, service providers can offer integrated social TV, which can offer viewers a reason to watch the initial program airing.

Consumers Like Social TV
With consumers spending an average of 12 hours online per week and another six hours dedicated to social media, online engagement has become important. Globally, three of five respondents said they had discussed TV programs with friends via social networks. Nearly half said they would be interested in this type of service – representing a huge opportunity for service providers.

Slightly more respondents (43 percent) said they would prefer accessing a social TV service using a PC, smartphone or tablet versus the television set (40 percent). The great majority of respondents would want to use a social TV service to comment on the programs they watch, though t-commerce was another application that drew significant interest. A third possible social TV application is video chat; support for this feature was especially high in China, with 58 percent of respondents interested, compared with 37 percent of U.S. respondents and only 19 percent in the U.K.

Mobile TV Is Finally Here
More than a third (37 percent) of global respondents said they watched video outside the home on a smartphone, tablet, PC or laptop.

- Twenty-three percent of U.S. respondents said they watched mobile TV on their smartphones, a fivefold increase over 2010. Twice as many – a full 46 percent – of Japanese respondents reported watching mobile TV on their smartphones in 2011.
- More than a quarter (27 percent) of global consumers aged 25-34 watched TV on a mobile device once or twice a week, as did just over a third of consumers in the 45-54 and 55+ age groups.

The Personal Cloud Takes Shape
A September 2011 Juniper Research study predicts consumer cloud revenues will reach $6.5 billion by 2016 – and that growth is driven by video and music services. This is supported by Motorola’s study, which found that 52 percent of U.S. consumers were interested in a service that enabled access to their personal data (such as videos, photos and other information) on any device, from anywhere in the world.

Two of five global respondents said they would be interested in a personal cloud type of service but would need to be convinced of its value. Interest was particularly high among respondents in Singapore (50 percent), South Korea (49 percent), UAE (39 percent) and the U.S. (37 percent).
Connected Home Services on the Rise
Respondents in Mexico (49 percent), Turkey (43 percent) and China (42 percent) are the most interested in being able to manage parts of the home remotely via a smartphone, tablet or laptop, while Australia, Sweden and the U.S. were close to the global average of 30 percent.

Globally, 36 percent of respondents said they would like their communications provider, instead of home security alarm companies or utility providers, to supply a home automation service. Finally, the research found that controlling the home remotely is of more interest to men (34 percent) than women (26 percent).

Justice Department Gears Up for ATT Litigation

The Justice Department's rejection of AT&T's proposed purchase of T-Mobile USA will test new federal guidelines on challenging mergers and the companies' resolve in forming the nation's largest wireless carrier.

A courtroom battle is likely and could wring out information that the companies would prefer to keep private. Still, AT&T Inc. has a big incentive to fight: If the deal is called off, the company has to pay a $3 billion breakup fee and surrender some of its unused spectrum for wireless communications.

AT&T is promising to fight the Justice Department's decision. The department filed a lawsuit Wednesday to block the $39 billion deal, saying it would reduce competition and lead to price increases for customers.

If AT&T follows through on that, it could produce the biggest antitrust showdown since business software maker Oracle Corp. squared off with the federal government seven years ago. That dispute, triggered by the government's decision to block Oracle's proposed purchase of rival PeopleSoft Inc., exposed several well-kept corporate secrets and required Oracle CEO Larry Ellison to testify before a packed courtroom.

Google Explores Adding Video To Kansas City Fiber Projects

Google is At It Again
Article Link

Google may compete with multichannel-TV providers in adding video and voice service to its high-speed broadband pilot project in Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., according to a published report which described the company's talks as exploratory. Google has hired cable-TV veteran Jeremy Stern to lead the video project in which the company has held talks with major network owners such as Walt Disney, Time Warner and Discovery Communications. The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model) (11/4)  LinkedIn Facebook Twitter Email this Story

What is Google doing in Kansas City?
We plan to build an ultra high-speed broadband network in Kansas City on both sides of the river. Our network will deliver Internet speeds of up to 1 gigabit (or 1,000 megabits) per second. That's more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today.

Why did Google choose Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri?
Nearly 1,100 communities across the country expressed interest in this project. Our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community, and develop working partnerships with the local government, utility and community organizations. We believe we’ve found this in both Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.

The 2011-2016 Outlook for Routers in The United States

2011-2016 Outlook for Routers
Story Link

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for routers across the states and cities of the United States. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 12,900 cities in the United States. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s state and of the United States is reported. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state and city, latent demand estimates are created for routers. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term results that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate.

Minnesota Struggles To Close Broadband Gap 28% Are Without Broadband Services

Minnesota struggles to close broadband adoption gap
By Sean Buckley

Despite all of the positive talk about the progress the United States has made with broadband, political leaders should look at Minnesota, a state where an estimated 28 percent of consumers still do not subscribe to a broadband service.
Connect Minnesota interactive chart

Click here for an interactive chart of Connect Minnesota survey results

While that figure is lower than the national average of 35 percent, a new survey released by Connect Minnesota this week revealed there are two main reasons why Minnesota residents don't have a broadband connection: a lack of interesting content, and the cost of service. An average broadband connection in Minnesota costs about $49.46 versus the national average price of $45.73 a month.

Keep in mind the U.S. Average without Broadband is 35% with South Carolina being one of the highest listed as 43%

TeleGeography: Service providers scramble to keep up with colocation space demand

TeleGeography: Service providers scramble to keep up with colocation space demand
By Sean Buckley

Despite the poor macroeconomic environment, data center and colocation space continues to be filled up a rapid pace, driving more service providers to increase their respective footprints organically and through targeted acquisitions.

Results from TeleGeography's new colocation survey revealed that as of September 2011, there was only 16 percent of retail colocation space available in the Washington, D.C. area, down 30 percent from the same period in 2010. Likewise, vacancy rates declined 36 percent in other major markets such as New York and 26 percent in London during the same period.

New York, in particular, saw the largest gain with over 1.3 million square feet of new colocation space being built between September 2009-2011. Meanwhile, service providers in Hong Kong and London added over 400,000 square feet of new colocation space followed by San Francisco, which added 300,000 feet.

Led by major carriers including AT&T (NYSE: T), CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL), Windstream (Nasdaq: WIN) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ) in addition to a host of specialized players like Telx, it appears that the colocation growth trend is going to continue.

"It's unlikely that the pace of expansion will slow anytime soon," said Jon Hjembo, a TeleGeography analyst. "While operators are adding capacity, vacancy rates in a number of metro markets we surveyed remain under 25 percent."

U.S. Dedicated Internet Access Services Market Update 2010 Market Research Report

This research study covers the U.S. market for dedicated internet access services through the period 2008 to 2015. The analysis in the study is segmented by retail (sales to enterprises) versus wholesale (sales to service providers) revenues, and percentage breakouts of revenues by service type. The wholesale portion of DIA is also commonly referred to as high-speed IP transit services in the industry. This is referred to as wholesale DIA in this study. The study provides market share analysis based on revenues for the U.S. dedicated internet access services market only.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled U.S. Dedicated Internet Access Services Market Update 2010 provides an analysis of key market drivers, restraints, and trends that are impacting the market, The study also presents market share analysis and competitive analysis. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following technologies: T1, T3, SONET, and Ethernet.

Market Overview

Migration of Bandwidth-Intensive Applications to the Internet Drives Growth in the U.S. DIA Services Market

The U.S. dedicated Internet access (DIA) services market has undergone some interesting changes over the past 2 years. Both the retail (DIA) and wholesale (high-speed IP transit) market segments experienced negative growth rate from 2008 to 2009, primarily due to the economic downturn. The market revenues did rebound modestly in 2010, with the retail recovering faster than the wholesale market. The need for businesses to access ever-higher IP bandwidth and the growing migration of bandwidth-intensive applications to the Internet is fuelling market spending on high-speed services. The Internet is viewed as a tool to reduce travel costs and help drive higher productivity due to real-time and virtual conferencing, collaboration, and other virtual office applications and services. “The shift to such applications – including video conferencing, web conferencing, Internet training and voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) – on the Internet is increasing bandwidth usage as companies apply these various tools to their overall cost reduction plans,” notes the analyst of this research service. “To manage the traffic growth companies are electing to purchase more bandwidth than currently needed, seek burstable options from suppliers or migrate to Ethernet for its scalability component.”

As customers add voice/video applications to their Internet pipes, there is a growing demand in the market for managed Internet services where the service provider offers a richer set of offerings that enhance the overall service experience/framework/component. Some of the services offered include: managed router, network security services (such as customer-premises equipment (CPE) or cloud-based, network management, and software updates) and physical maintenance as covered in the service level agreements (SLAs).

Pricing pressures on the wholesale side for high-speed IP transit services continue to challenge service provider revenues. The economic downturn has only worsened the situation. Although demand for high-speed IP transit services remains high, the price decline has clearly led to reduced revenues overall. Wholesale customers are demanding higher speed ports but the commit rate on those ports is lower than the commit rates for TDM services. “Wholesale customers are investing in Ethernet as it comes at a better price per megabit (MB),” says the analyst. “However, the fact that Ethernet bandwidth is easily scalable has led to reduced commit rates on the ports.” Service providers are trying to address this challenge by keeping the per MB price higher for lower commit rates to ensure high levels of commitment from customers. In the retail DIA services market, demand for traditional services such as T1/T3 and SONET is declining, but the growing demand for Ethernet services is sustaining market growth. The DIA services market is a fairly commoditized market as service providers have traditionally offered just pure bandwidth. This has resulted in a significant reduction of pricing levels for DIA services. Over the past 4-5 years, carriers are emphasizing value-added services and managed services to counter the revenue decline. Hence, this challenge is acting as a driver for companies willing to provide managed services and as a restraint to those who see the DIA space as selling pure bandwidth.

The Quest For Speed and The Exchange Gateway To Asia

The Race To Zero: Asia
Singapore SGX has commited US$250m to its low latency cause, as algo trading spurs investment in data center infrastructure around the world. SGX details its reach
Published by Ambrose McNevin

One of the key topics of concern for brokers and traders wishing to have high-speed access to trading engines is location – or “just how physically close can you get me to the trading platform”.

In London, with its multiple exchanges, the issue is around staying inside its M25 ring road. Go any further than that trading platform and the milliseconds start to build up and you find yourself stuck in the slow lane.

In New York, the answer is not to be any further than North New Jersey where there is a large concentration of data centers including the Verizon site that hosts Nasdaq and the Mahwah data center built and owned by NYSE Euronext.

In Singapore, there are no such worries about far-flung locations. Being on an island measuring just 10km x 40km means that wherever you locate you can never be that far away from the trading engine.

For the Singapore Stock Exchange (SGX), its US$250m investment in an ultra-low latency trading platform called Reach is about locating in an ultra modern data center with super-fast connectivity to Tokyo, Chicago, New York and London.

Bob Caisley, CIO at the Singapore Stock Exchange, says he believes he is building the fastest trading engine in the world. “Reach is about having the fastest trading engine in the world, at the best data center in Asia with the best colocation facilities,” he says.

Like all trading engines, Caisley acknowledges there may be other trading platforms which will outpace his, but for now, his will be the fastest with an order response time of 90 microseconds.

This quest for speed is behind the exchange’s US$250m investment in Tier IV data center infrastructure which is scheduled for commission at the end of Q1 2011. The fit out is currently underway and SGX believes it can attract algo traders not only for its international derivatives business but its cash equities business which it sees as having huge growth potential for high frequency trading and making Singapore “the exchange gateway to Asia”.

An Explanation Of How Ip Transit Is So Important For The Internet

by Alfonso Hinton

Two services make up IP Transit. The first being customer routes being advertised to other ISP’s (Internet Service Providers). The other part being advertising routes to other ISP’s. Commonly this is done by the use of default routes or set of routes to everywhere else on the internet. However this is not always the case. This means they are soliciting the outbound traffic from the customer towards the other networks. IP Transit can be explained by the following.

There are some slightly more technical questions you need to ask both yourself and your provider about. You have dual IP stack which is an IPv4 to IPv6 transitional technology that uses the two existing internet protocols in the operating system. One for each of the versions of IP. The implementation may be different for each host, some using a hybrid system while others implementing IPv4 and IPv6 separately. The latter is the more common implementation in modern operating systems on both the server and for an end user.

You may need to consider routing protocols and whether your happy for your route to be pre-defined on where to go using one route. This can be because there is only one route out from the network and thus you go through another router owned by some one else first or for cost reasons. the internets’ core protocol of the internet is called Border Gateway or BGP by holding and updating a table of IP networks or prefixes this is used to designate the availability of a network. By Autonomous system which is a collection of connected IP routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators and so that presents a common and clearly defined routing policy to the internet. The actual BGP is described as a path vector protocol which updates the path information dynamically. Any updates that get looped through the same node are easily detected and discarded and used in some other routing protocols to avoid any count to infinity loops.

You also have peering, which is a voluntary interconnection of separately owned and operated networks for the purpose of exchanging traffic between the customers of each network. The real definition is defined as “sender keeps all” or settlement free, which means the owners of each network will pay the other to exchange data with each other. This ensures that the revenue has to come from their customers. So many companies now inappropriately use the work Peering when they really mean it when payment is involved. As not to cause confusion many people now use the term “settlement free peering” to make sure that no one misunderstands what is being advertised or described.

It is via metro ethernet, that datacentres talk to each other. The internet is a great big collection of independant networks all operating from a set of standards of unique IP addressing and the use of BGP routing. You find that relationships form between networks and so can be placed in three categories. Transit where you make payment to another network to gain internet access. Peer or swap and exchange the traffic for the others customers freely and for a mutual benefit, or finally as a customer where another network pays you to provide them with internet access. A network to beable to reach any other networks on the internet it must sell transit, directly peer with the network, or pay another for network transit and go round the loop until reaching the destination

Federal Communications Commission Reforms an $8 billion Phone Subsidy Program By Reallocating Money To Extend Broadband Internet Connections

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission recently announced a proposal to reform an $8 billion phone subsidy program by reallocating money to extend broadband Internet connections in rural areas. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said in a speech Thursday that his plan to reform the Universal Service Fund would put about $4.5 billion into two funds to bring wireline and wireless high-speed Internet connections to 18 million homes that don't have access. He didn't reveal many details of his plan, which critics fear will closely resemble proposals by giant phone companies that could favor them. [1] THE LEDE: Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski announced his plan to reform the Universal Service Fund on Thursday, calling the current system "outdated," "wasteful" and "unfair."

The FCC estimates 18 million Americans live in areas without access to broadband; Genachowski said his plan would cut that figure in half within five years. It's still unclear how similar Genachowski's proposal is to America's Broadband Connectivity (ABC) Plan, which was drafted by the major telecom firms. He said his plan "will not rubber stamp or adopt wholesale the proposals of any stakeholders" but rather he reviewed a variety of suggested proposals and his plan includes elements of many of them. "Chairman Genachowski has taken an important step forward today in bringing broadband -- both wired and wireless -- to all Americans. I strongly support and applaud his efforts and look forward to working with him and his fellow Commissioners to reform the universal service system. Next week, the Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on the need to move forward on these important proposals. We have a real opportunity to close the digital divide in rural America if we get this right.

Sales Success Strategies For a Social & Mobile World

Where is Social Media Going
Selling Power Article Link

Social media and mobile sales have changed the way we relate, communicate, and conduct business. Eric Qualman, the author of the bestselling book, Socialnomics, said it best, “We don’t have a choice whether we do social media; the question is how well we do it.”

Let’s look at the facts: Only 14% of people trust advertising; 93% of marketers use social media for business. Big Shift #1: we’re moving from customer relationship management (CRM) to customer engagement management, aka Social CRM. Tech research firm Gartner predicts that by 2012 the Social CRM market will be more than $1 billion with 100+ companies competing for this rapidly growing pie. The three leading vendors are Jive, Salesforce, and Lithium.

If you’re still unclear about how to approach sales success strategies in a social and mobile world, picture your office water cooler going global, enabling B2B sales conversations in real time, 24/7.

Here are the numbers:

175 million users log on to Facebook every 24 hours.
65 million access Facebook through a mobile device and they share 30 billion (billion!) pieces of content every month and that number includes 3 billion photos and videos.
84% of Internet users watch videos online.
YouTube visitors watch 2 billion videos every day.
LinkedIn attracts one new member every second.
Econsultancy reports that over 25 billion tweets were sent last year.

Colorado's Tech Industry Takes a Hit!

Colorado lost 5,300 tech industry jobs in 2010, mostly as telecommunications and engineering services companies cut back, according to the TechAmerica Foundation annual census.

The Washington D.C.-based trade group released its Cyberstates report at 10:01 p.m. MDT Tuesday.

TechAmerica, formerly known as AeA, has measured technology industry employment using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data for 14 years.

Colorado’s high-tech workforce totaled 156,900 in 2010, down 3.2 percent from the 162,200 counted in 2009, the report said. The average private sector tech worker in Colorado earned $90,800 in 2010, which is 96 percent more than the average private sector wage in the state.

Ethernet and The Need For Speed, Updated Industry News

By Rose Klimovich
Article Link

According to Vertical Systems Group, some enterprise customers are now buying Ethernet connections at speeds of 1 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s and higher. This is an interesting trend. According to Rick Malone, principal at Vertical Systems Group, the financial industry was the first to adopt 10 Gb/s connectivity, but more recently 10 Gb/s service has also gained strength in the health care sector to support medical campus connectivity, and in media and entertainment, where streaming applications are becoming increasingly popular. These industries “are very actively trying to get the highest bandwidth available from their service providers," said Malone.

What is driving this growth in the enterprise segment? Here are a few examples:

Data center consolidation – putting all your servers and storage in a centralized location separate from the users, increases the bandwidth needed.High speed data center to data center connectivity for back-up and other uses. Ethernet access to other services like VPN and the Internet. Growth in applications like videoconferencing and medical imaging, which need higher bandwidth.

Variosu providers now carry a variety of services to help. As standards have solidified, some service providers have begun to make 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s connectivity available. This is a higher speed than needed for most enterprises who buy Ethernet Service at 1 Gb/s, Rick said.

One way to get cost-effective Ethernet Services is via an Ethernet Exchange like those offered by Telx and Neutral Tandem. An Ethernet Exchange brings together the sellers and buyers of Ethernet Services. So, you can come to the exchange and see who has the Ethernet Services you need.

Berkeley Leads in Exploring Practical and Revolutionary Usages of Web and Cell Tools

Edited by Debra Tone Article Link

BERKELEY, Calif., Sept. 20, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The University of California at Berkeley, in partnership with the World Mind Network, is becoming the nexus of a new movement aiming to maximize the vast power embedded in commonly used Web and Smart phone technologies to effect useful change in the world.

According to Sarah Mendel of the NGO Friends Without Borders, UC has the size, reputation, and brainpower to show the world the under-realized potential of social networking, micro blogging, cell phone apps, online video, and other popular free electronic tools to solve problems in education, research, environmentalism, and social change.

Berkeley is no stranger to initiating new trends, having sparked the Free Speech movement of the 1960′s, and various other cultural, scientific, and academic shifts.

Denver Dish Network is To Unveil Streaming Service, Get Top

Dish Network to unveil streaming service
Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 2:58pm MDT
Greg AveryReporter - Denver Business JournalEmail

Satellite TV company Dish Network .. on Friday will announce a new service likely to include movie streaming offered through its Blockbuster brand.

The Douglas County-based company, co-founded and controlled by Charlie Ergen, has scheduled a media conference call for Friday morning.

CEO Joe Clayton and Blockbuster President Michael Kelly are scheduled to unveil the service from San Francisco in a press conference dubbed “A Stream Come True” (held via Ustream web streaming service, appropriately enough).

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), which rarely underplays a promotional opportunity, promises the service will be “the most comprehensive entertainment package ever!”

In addition to having the webstreaming technology that Blockbuster used, Dish Network has been rumored to be bidding for the online video service Hulu. Whatever the outlines of the new Dishbuster service, it’s likely to salt Netflix ..’s recent wounds.
