Ethernet and The Need For Speed, Updated Industry News

By Rose Klimovich
Article Link

According to Vertical Systems Group, some enterprise customers are now buying Ethernet connections at speeds of 1 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s and higher. This is an interesting trend. According to Rick Malone, principal at Vertical Systems Group, the financial industry was the first to adopt 10 Gb/s connectivity, but more recently 10 Gb/s service has also gained strength in the health care sector to support medical campus connectivity, and in media and entertainment, where streaming applications are becoming increasingly popular. These industries “are very actively trying to get the highest bandwidth available from their service providers," said Malone.

What is driving this growth in the enterprise segment? Here are a few examples:

Data center consolidation – putting all your servers and storage in a centralized location separate from the users, increases the bandwidth needed.High speed data center to data center connectivity for back-up and other uses. Ethernet access to other services like VPN and the Internet. Growth in applications like videoconferencing and medical imaging, which need higher bandwidth.

Variosu providers now carry a variety of services to help. As standards have solidified, some service providers have begun to make 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s connectivity available. This is a higher speed than needed for most enterprises who buy Ethernet Service at 1 Gb/s, Rick said.

One way to get cost-effective Ethernet Services is via an Ethernet Exchange like those offered by Telx and Neutral Tandem. An Ethernet Exchange brings together the sellers and buyers of Ethernet Services. So, you can come to the exchange and see who has the Ethernet Services you need.

Berkeley Leads in Exploring Practical and Revolutionary Usages of Web and Cell Tools

Edited by Debra Tone Article Link

BERKELEY, Calif., Sept. 20, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The University of California at Berkeley, in partnership with the World Mind Network, is becoming the nexus of a new movement aiming to maximize the vast power embedded in commonly used Web and Smart phone technologies to effect useful change in the world.

According to Sarah Mendel of the NGO Friends Without Borders, UC has the size, reputation, and brainpower to show the world the under-realized potential of social networking, micro blogging, cell phone apps, online video, and other popular free electronic tools to solve problems in education, research, environmentalism, and social change.

Berkeley is no stranger to initiating new trends, having sparked the Free Speech movement of the 1960′s, and various other cultural, scientific, and academic shifts.

Denver Dish Network is To Unveil Streaming Service, Get Top

Dish Network to unveil streaming service
Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2011, 2:58pm MDT
Greg AveryReporter - Denver Business JournalEmail

Satellite TV company Dish Network .. on Friday will announce a new service likely to include movie streaming offered through its Blockbuster brand.

The Douglas County-based company, co-founded and controlled by Charlie Ergen, has scheduled a media conference call for Friday morning.

CEO Joe Clayton and Blockbuster President Michael Kelly are scheduled to unveil the service from San Francisco in a press conference dubbed “A Stream Come True” (held via Ustream web streaming service, appropriately enough).

Dish Network (Nasdaq: DISH), which rarely underplays a promotional opportunity, promises the service will be “the most comprehensive entertainment package ever!”

In addition to having the webstreaming technology that Blockbuster used, Dish Network has been rumored to be bidding for the online video service Hulu. Whatever the outlines of the new Dishbuster service, it’s likely to salt Netflix ..’s recent wounds.

U.S Ethernet Bandwidth Surpasses Legacy Bandwidth

Article Link By Rose Klimovich

Boosted by a 10x surge in the past five years, Ethernet bandwidth has overtaken legacy bandwidth in the U.S. market," said Erin Dunne, director of research services at Vertical Systems Group. "This milestone fittingly coincides with the ten year anniversary of the MEF – an organization that has successfully fostered the deployment of carrier-class Ethernet services throughout the world."

Ethernet has grown in importance since it is has many desirable characteristics: high bandwidth; is very scalable; meets latency requirements; and can be used in a multitude of access, metro and core applications. Service technologies using Ethernet include Private Lines, Frame Relay, ATM, TDM, wireless back haul and business broadband services. Ethernet can be used as an end-to-end network or as an access technology for MPLS and Internet networks. Overall, Ethernet coverage is growing but is still an issue in some areas.

In the U.S., Ethernet services are offered by telco's like AT&T and Verizon as well as XO, TW telecom, Comcast and Cox. This growth is good news for companies like these who have downward pressure in other business areas like voice.

This should also be a boost for companies like Cisco, Juniper, Adva and Ciena, who make Ethernet equipment.

“The growth in service provider investments in carrier Ethernet equipment continues to outpace that of other telecom equipment, with annual global spending expected to reach $37.5 billion in 2015. The largest investments are in routers, carrier Ethernet switches (CES), and optical gear," notes Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst for carrier networks at Infonetics Research. In 2010, carriers spent $26.5 billion on carrier Ethernet equipment as they continued moving from TDM to packet-based networks.

What is the key growth area here? There are still a lot of older mobile backhaul networks out there. Mobile back haul will continue to be a key area for Ethernet growth as the growing use of smartphones and tablets continues to put pressure on the wireless carriers to increase bandwidth.
